Washington, 28 dic (EFE).- Maine, al noreste de Estados Unidos, se convirtió este jueves en el segundo estado en expulsar al expresidente Donald Trump (2017-2021), precandidato a los comicios de 2024, de las primarias republicanas de ese estado, por su rol en el asalto al Capitolio el 6 de enero de 2021.
En un documento compartido por varios medios de comunicación estadounidenses, la secretaria de Estado de Maine, Shenna Bellows, anunció la decisión, alegando que Trump no puede participar en los comicios por haber participado en una “insurrección”.
La decisión de Bellows llega una semana después de que el Tribunal Supremo del estado de Colorado, en una medida histórica, fallara a favor de expulsar al republicano de las primarias de su partido.
La secretaria de Estado de Maine, al igual que el Supremo de Colorado, apeló a la Enmienda 14 de la Constitución, que prohíbe a personas que han participado en una insurrección ocupar un cargo de elección popular.
Esa enmienda fue aprobada en 1868, después de la guerra civil en Estados Unidos, para evitar que personas asociadas con los alzados sureños de la Confederación pudiesen llegar al poder.
“Soy consciente de que ningún Secretario de Estado ha privado jamás a un candidato presidencial del acceso a las urnas basándose en la Sección Tres de la Decimocuarta Enmienda”, escribió Bellows en el documento compartido por medios estadounidenses.
“Sin embargo, también soy consciente de que ningún candidato presidencial ha participado nunca antes en una insurrección”, resaltó Bellows.
El Partido Republicano de Colorado decidió el miércoles recurrir ante el Supremo de EE.UU. la decisión de la descalificación electoral de Trump de las elecciones de este estado.
El 6 de enero de 2021, miles de seguidores del presidente Trump asaltaron el Capitolio de EE.UU. mientras los legisladores estaban en el proceso de certificar los resultados de las elecciones que dieron la victoria al actual presidente, Joe Biden.
